faulkner

“The young man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat.”

Hmm… Man vs. nature, man vs. self, man vs. man, what are the other ones from 7th grade? I don’t remember heart vs. self, but Faulkner has a nice point.

My heart might not be fighting itself, but my poor brain certainly is. No resolution in sight.

Emily, that’s a post in itself.

Brain fights are the worse, no?

Well said, Faulkner. “The Sound and the Fury” is one of my favorite American novels because you can feel Faulkner’s agony and sweat in it…

Ah, Fauklner. How I love thee. And how he loved scotch. ; )

(He is one of my all-time favorites, by the way. As is Melville, and Conrad. And well, myriad others. I’ll stop being a Lit. geek now. Sort of. ; ) )

Interesting to come across this as I was going over the last year on my site and reminding myself of times in Vietnam/Jakarta – the posts that stood out to me, where I felt I’d come up with some quality, were about exactly what Faulkner descirbes.

I had to do an essay on faulkner. I just don’t like him much.

but that is such a true statement.
