There were a couple of young teachers there and one of them, an earnest type, started asking the questions. \u2018Miss O\u2019Connor,\u201d he said, \u2018why was the Misfit\u2019s hat black?\u2019 I said most countrymen in Georgia wore black hats. He looked pretty disappointed. Then he said, \u2018Miss O\u2019Connor, the Misfit represents Christ, does he not?\u2019 \u2018He does not,\u2019 I said. He looked crushed. \u2018Well, Miss O\u2019Connor,\u2019 he said, \u2018what is the significance of the Misfit\u2019s hat?\u2019 I said it was to cover his head; and after that he left me alone.
