I survived the culture shock and the beans for breakfast.  But it was the whole &#8220;You say tomAAAto , I say tomAHto&#8221; thing that took a while.   If I&#8217;m honest, it&#8217;s still taking.  (Last week I asked a concierge for directions to the rest room.  He sent me to the lobby.) <\/p>\n<p>So here we go.  For the American novice (i.e. tourist, holidayer, vacationer) traveling to the mother land, a few pointers &#8211; because our English, isn&#8217;t always that of the Queen.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Bangers<\/strong>  (n.) &#8211; Sausages.  As in &#8216;Bangers and Mash&#8217;.  An English meal.<br \/>\n<strong>Biscuit<\/strong>  (n.) &#8211; Cookie or Cracker.<br \/>\n<strong>Brolly<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; Umbrella<br \/>\n<strong>Bum<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; A humorous term for a person&#8217;s backside.  (Not vagrant.)<br \/>\n<strong>Butty<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; Sandwich.<br \/>\n<strong>Cheers <\/strong>(phrase) &#8211; Drinking toast.  Also means goodbye and\/or thanks.<br \/>\n<strong>Chemist<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; Pharmacist\/Pharmacy<br \/>\n<strong>Chippie<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; Fish and chip shop. (Chips = Fries)<br \/>\n<strong>Cupaa<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; A cup of tea.<br \/>\n<strong>Football <\/strong>(n.) &#8211; Soccer<br \/>\n<strong>Gob<\/strong> (slang)  &#8211; Slang for &#8216;mouth&#8217;<br \/>\n<strong>Holiday<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; Vacation<br \/>\n<strong>Knackered<\/strong> (phrase) &#8211; Tired<br \/>\n<strong>Lift <\/strong>(n.) &#8211; Elevator<br \/>\n<strong>Lorry<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; Truck<br \/>\n<strong>Nick <\/strong>(v.) &#8211; To steal<br \/>\n<strong>Pants<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; Underwear (Can also mean lame.)<br \/>\n<strong>Petrol<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; Gasoline<br \/>\n<strong>Pinch <\/strong>(n.) &#8211; Steal<br \/>\n<strong>Quid <\/strong>(n.) &#8211; Pound (As in money, not weight)<br \/>\n<strong>Snog <\/strong> (v) &#8211; To Kiss <em>(thanks oob)<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Stone <\/strong>(n.) &#8211; 14 pounds (weight)<br \/>\n<strong>Tea<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; A light early evening meal (also a drink of course)<br \/>\n<strong>Torch<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; Flash light<br \/>\n<strong>Underground<\/strong> (n.) &#8211; Subway<\/p>\n<p>Am I missing anything? <\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had to do my fair share of adjusting when I moved to England.
