the holiday

I’ve just finished watching The Holiday. Kate Winslet is lovely. But I can’t bring myself to care for Cameron Diaz and I find Jude Law incredibly pompous and irritating – in spite of that rather touching display of affection in his penultimate scene. I would have turned it off, Winslet notwithstanding, were it not for this. Huge chunks of the film bore a striking resemblance to my life. The good, the bad and the ugly (Eli Wallach pun intended).

I remember all too well the pivotal breakdown. The trying to cope with not having the relationship I thought I needed. Leaving my own country, on a whim, to clear my head in another. Falling madly, deeply. On a two week holiday. With a country and a man.

Didsbury

I was Cameron without the fancy home. Driving very badly on the wrong side of the road and sleeping in a cottage lined by cobbled streets. An accidental meeting with a handsome foreigner. Yup. Me too.

And Kate, who spent three years loving a man who didn’t love her back. Who didn’t want her to stay but wouldn’t let her go either. More me.

But that’s another story.

i haven’t seen “the holiday” yet, but i must admit that the concept is tempting … i find myself wishing that i could escape from my life here and go somewhere for a fresh perspective and a bit of unexpected romance. i would prefer to be kate, though … and call me nuts, but i would pick jack black over jude law. :)

Terry…I think I know of where you speak. Around Bardsley..yes?

Much as I loved the village (I lived in a cottage on this street…before and after that … on Ford Lane) I didn’t enjoy the midnight revellers weeing on my garden gates after crawling the Didsbury dozen. My housemate and I once spent an evening with our drapes open, hoping to shame them into keeping their trousers up…the idea being they only acted this way because they thought no one was looking. Didn’t work. The gate still got wee-ed on. And we got more than we bargained for.Thank goodness for double glazing and alarms. Ah, student life.

And Michelle … what’s up with nuts? It’s Jack over Jude any day, if you ask me. Nothing personal. He just reminds me of my neighbour. Who is obnoxious.

Kate Winslet is just amazing. I’m with you about Cameron Diaz. Not much for her… I never seen this movie though.

  6. Marina says:

I have to agree with almost everything except that I really like Jude Law – though not so much in this flick.

  7. Buffy says:

Marina, you’re not the first person to say as much about him. I don’t know what it is – other than the obvious neighbour thing – I’m a huge fan of the British in general. Just can’t warm up to Jude.

  8. I dislike Cameron diaz and her character. I also dislike Jude Law, just because, I do.

A movie that was just too easy to turn down. But, I also wrote a post about it haha.

I’ll go catch that movie after evil things called ‘examinations’ are over. Was just reliving old posts and remembered your link. Good luck with the writing, I’m convinced you have sufficient (or even more than sufficient) talent and passion, and lived life life intends to be lived to ‘out-write’ more than five writers. :D

  13. Peachy says:

Its a great country to fall in love with.

  14. brookem says:

I saw this a while ago. Not a big fan of Cameron, love Kate. I could really relate to Kate’s charachter, and found myself, teary throughout the movie. I tend to really, really like Jude Law though.

  15. Serena says:

It’s funny how we can’t let go of something (someone) we know in our hearts is bad for us. And, whew, someone else who isn’t all googoo over Jude Law.

  16. thethinker says:

I watched the Holiday this past Sunday and felt the same way about Jude Law (both the character he played and the actor himself).

  17. she says:

No interest in seeing the Holiday here, but I did want to add to your comment motivated exercise ;)

    Have a great day.

I’ve just recently started reading your blog and your stories are intriguing. I like to read peoples blogs that can be so candid.
The concept of taking off for a foreign country is appealing to me.

Wow. How did I not come across your blog before??

  23. Bre says:

As soon as the credits rolled, I looked at my friend Cyndi and we both, at the same time, said “I’m a Kate Winslet!” Because it’s absolutely true. Fabulous movie if you push out all the Cameron Diaz junk!

  24. I absolutely adored “The Holiday.” Very funny and definitely hit a nerve or two.

  25. Anne says:

I haven’t seen the movie yet but I love it when movies relate to real life – even if Jude Law is irritating.
